Wapping |
<top> | ||
Much has been written about Wapping - an area steeped in history dating as far back as the Saxons. Now Wapping is an eclectic mix of old and new. Warehouse conversions and cobbled streets give away Wapping's trading and maritime history, but glass-fronted offices and luxury waterfront apartments reinforce a modern and trendy image. As a resident Wapping has a number of amenities and facilities including a sports centre, restaurants, pubs, doctor and dentist surgeries. Wapping Lane in the heart of the area is a village-like street complete with a butchers, baker, post office and pharmacy. As an area, Wapping is small and one is able to explore the maze-like streets and canals on foot. Notable pubs in the area include the Prospect of Whitby, which claims to be the oldest Thames-side pub in London. Formerly a meeting place for sailors, smugglers and cut-throats, a noose hangs by a window to commemorate the custom of "Hanging" Judge Jeffreys! The Captain Kidd is another popular choice, named after the Scottish privateer William Kidd who was hung in Wapping back in 1701. |

St Katharine Docks |
<top> | ||
St Katharine Docks took their name from the former 12th century hospital of St Katharine's by the Tower, which stood on the site. Now the Docks are an oasis of calm and tranquillity in a bustling and noisy London. St Katharine Docks have a self-contained feel comprising of residential apartments, offices, shops, restaurants and a marina. Amongst some of the facilities are a pharmacy, beauty spa, and newsagent. The area benefits from many eateries including sandwich bars, cafes and restaurants. If you're feeling particularly brave there is The Medieval Banquet! |
|||
Most of all, St Katharine Docks provide a scenic shortcut to Tower Hill and Tower Gateway stations, as well as to the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the riverside. |
